SKF Electrical Discharge Detector Pen
Your electric motors should not suffer from unexpected bearing failures
At SKF we believe in predictive maintenance; determining the condition of machinery while in operation and planning repairs of problem components prior to failure.
If you have ever experienced unexpected bearing failures in your electric motors then you are familiar with the associated negative impacts; unplanned downtime, lost production, repair costs, extra manpower costs and more.
What if there was an easy and quick way to detect a potential threat of bearing failure ahead of time? We have an answer:
The new SKF Electrical Discharge Detector Pen can help you detect if your electric motor bearings are vulnerable to suffer from electrical erosion and eventual failure.
What is electrical erosion and how does it cause bearing failure? In electric motors that are controlled by Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), the VFD induces electrical currents that may increase until they find discharge paths to earth via the motor frame. The electric currents pass through the bearing and when the voltage reaches a level to overcome the lubricant film layer in the bearing, electrical discharge occurs. Over time this can cause electrical erosion. Electrical erosion can cause bearings to fail very prematurely causing motor failure and unplanned downtime.
What is the SKF Electrical Discharge Detector Pen? The SKF Electrical Discharge Detector Pen (EDD Pen) is a new innovative instrument. It is a simple to use, handheld instrument for detecting electrical discharges in electric motor bearings remotely. With the help of the EDD Pen you can detect whether electrical discharge is occurring in the bearing or not. This can help you easily identify bearings that are more susceptible to failure and plan necessary actions ahead of time.
The SKF Electrical Discharge Detector Pen is available for order from our global distributor locations. The ordering designation is TKED 1.
